Spend the day in the Yorkshire Dales with Mark Reid FRGS and Mike Raine, learning about the Nature of the Yorkshire Dales – discover, explore and learn about its amazing array of flora and fauna as well as the incredible physical and human geography of this wonderful area.

A walk for all seasons – we’ll delve deeper into the landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales in spring, summer and autumn. We’ll explore the plants, wildlife, rocks and human legacy of the Yorkshire Dales on a 8 mile walk, from the carboniferous limestone and gritstone rocks to what you’ll find growing and living on them.

This Nature of the Yorkshire Dales will introduce you to the many different elements that make the Yorkshire Dales such a special place, one of the Britain’s 15 National Parks. This full day’s walk will give you an overview and understanding of the Yorkshire Dales, how it was formed and shaped, its wildlife, ecosystems, human influence and what makes it so special.

Mark Reid has walked almost all of the paths, tracks, hills and fells in the Yorkshire Dales over the past 30 years. Mark has a Geography Degree from the University of Lancaster, is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and has also written 17 walking books, including 6 books about the Yorkshire Dales.

Mike Raine is a geography graduate and former teacher. He worked at Plan y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre, for 15 years. He’s a Winter Mountaineering & Climbing Instructor and International Mountain Leader. Mike now runs a small business in Eryri offering training workshops to Mountain Leaders. He is the author of the Nature of Snowdonia and The Mountain Leader.

OUTLINE OF THE DAY

9:30am: Meet at a village car park in the Yorkshire Dales

9:30am – 5pm: Full day’s guided walk in the Yorkshire Dales, looking at the natural world of the Yorkshire Dales – its fauna, flora, physical and human geography. The walk will cover around 8 miles over the day, with plenty of rest stops and time to admire the explore and admire the views. The walk will include paths across farmland, valleys, riversides, woodland, moorland, hills and fells, with some rough, uneven and wet ground in places as well as some ascents and descents. We may experience adverse weather conditions, which often adds to the experience.

5pm: De-brief back at the village
