5 day Walking Trip Northumberland Coast Path

65 miles from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Amble
Dramatic castles, sweeping beaches, cliff-top paths & quaint fishing villages

Walk the Northumberland Coast Path in the company of Mark Reid, experienced Mountain Leader and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), who will share his detailed knowledge of this wonderful coastline with its imposing castles, sweeping bays, historic islands, quaint fishing villages and impressive wildlife and seabirds.

Walk 65 miles over five wonderful days between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Amble, with overnight stops at Holy Island, Bamburgh, Embleton and Alnmouth.

Mark Reid spent two years walking the paths and coastline of Northumberland whilst researching his book The Inn Way… to Northumberland, and will share his knowledge of the area with you.

ITINERARY

Meet at Berwick-upon-Tweed Railway Station at 9:30am on Monday. The Baggage Courier will collect our luggage.

Monday – Berwick-upon-Tweed to Holy Island
Route highlights: 
Berwick-upon-Tweed’s Elizabethan fortifications, Cocklawburn Dunes nature reserve, Lindisfarne Pilgrim’s Path (barefoot across the sands) and spend a night on Holy Island. 14 miles

Tuesday – Holy Island to Bamburgh
Route highlights: Back across the Causeway, Shiellow Wood, Kyloe Hills, Belford and the Great North Road, the legend of the Laidley Worm and the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. 18 miles

Wednesday – Bamburgh to Embleton
Route highlights: Bamburgh Beach, Seahouses, Beadnell Limekilns, Beadnell Bay, Low Newton-by-the-Sea and Embleton Bay – a day of sweeping beaches. 12 miles

Thursday – Embleton to Alnmouth
Route highlights: Impressive Dunstanburgh Castle, Craster kippers, cliff-top paths and seabirds, Boulmer, Alnmouth and more magnificent beaches. 11 miles

Friday – Alnmouth to Amble
Route highlights: Explore historic Alnmouth, views across the Aln Estuary from Church Hill, Alnmouth Bay, Warkworth Castle & Hermitage and Amble Harbour. 10 miles

All distances are approximate. The Baggage Courier will drop our luggage at a pub in Amble, where we will end our walk. There is a frequent bus service between Amble and Alnmouth Station (20 minute journey), from where you may wish to catch the train back to Berwick-upon-Tweed or back home. 

HOW TO GET TO BERWICK-UPON-TWEED

There is a train station at Berwick-upon-Tweed on the East Coast Mainline, with regular fast trains between York and Edinburgh. We will then spend 5 days walking southwards along the Northumberland Coast to Amble, from where there is a frequent bus service to Alnmouth train station (20 minute bus journey) on the East Coast Mainline. You can then either catch a train back to Berwick-upon-Tweed (20 minute journey) or onward travel home. For train times, please visit National Rail Enquiries

You may wish to consider staying at Berwick-upon-Tweed before our walk and Amble after our walk, although these are optional.
