Isle of Mull Adventure Week Tobermory, Scotland

With Mark Reid FRGS – author of ‘The Inn Way’ guidebooks & Mountain Leader

Spend five days exploring the rugged and dramatic mountains, islands and coastline of the beautiful Isle of Mull, the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. The walks will be guided by Mark Reid, a highly experienced Mountain Leader.

There will be five days of walking with varied routes ranging from adventurous mountain hikes to the summit of Ben More (966m), the island’s only Munro, to sandy beaches, beautiful small islands and rugged coastal walks.

Discover adventurous mountain summits, secluded glens, stunning beaches and dramatic coastline on the beautiful Isle of Mull, famed for its wildlife including white-tailed sea eagles, golden eagles, whales, dolphins, otters, pine martens plus much more.

Explore amazing geology and archaeology. The oldest rocks on Mull date back some 2 billion years, although much of Mull is comprised of volcanic rocks that extruded when the Atlantic Ocean opened up some 60 million years ago. This is also Scotland’s ‘Cradle of Christianity’, with a rich religious history that dates back to AD563 when Irish monk Saint Columba established a monastery on the small island of Iona, just off Mull’s southwest peninsula known as the Ross of Mull.

  • Five fantastic days of guided walks, ranging from adventurous mountain routes to hill, glen, island and coastal walks.
  • Walks guided by knowledgeable and experienced Mountain Leader.
  • Experience the camaraderie of walking on this beautiful Scottish island.
  • Sociable evenings in some of Tobermory’s pubs and restaurants.
  • Small group size – maximum 10 hikers.
ISLE OF MULL, SCOTLAND

This 5-day Isle of Mull Adventure Week will be based from the lovely old fishing port of Tobermory, famed for its colourful harbour-front houses and as the setting of the children’s TV show Balamory. Tobermory is one of the prettiest ports in Scotland whose layout was designed by famous Scottish engineer Thomas Telford. The houses overlook a sweeping sheltered bay where, according to legend, a Spanish Armada galleon sank with its cargo of gold bullion! Here you will find an array of hotels, B&Bs, pubs, restaurants, shops, cafes, a distillery, Youth Hostel and campsite. HOW TO GET TO TOBERMORY, ISLE OF MULL

The Isle of Mull is served by a frequent ferry service between Oban on the mainland and Craignure on the Isle of Mull – see CalMac Ferries.

There is a train station at Oban, served by regular direct trains from Glasgow; journey time approx. 3 hours 15 minutes – see ScotRail.

To get to Oban by car, follow the A82 from Glasgow to Tyndrum, then take the A85 to Oban, from where you can catch the ferry (50 minute crossing). It is then a 35-minute drive from Craignure and Tobermory.

Please arrange your own food, travel and accommodation. You will need the use of a car whilst on the Isle of Mull as the walk meeting points will be up to 90-minute driving time of Tobermory, although most walks will involve much shorter driving times than this. We will car share wherever possible to reduce our carbon footprint.

OVERVIEW OF THE WALKS

There will be five days of walking with an array of routes ranging from adventurous mountain hikes to dramatic hill, glen, island and coastal walks. The walks will vary each day to give you the very best Isle of Mull walking experience, from mountains and glens to coast and islands.

We will walk as one group of up to 10 people, guided by Mark Reid (Mountain Leader). A good level of fitness is required for these walks. The precise routes will be decided each day given the weather forecast, ground conditions and group needs.

On MONDAY we’ll meet at 10am at Craignure, then on TUESDAY to FRIDAY we’ll meet at 9am at Tobermory, where we’ll discuss the day’s adventures. We’ll car share to the starting points of the walks, which will be within a 90-minute drive of Tobermory (this is the maximum driving time from Tobermory to Iona; all other walks will involve shorter driving times). Some walks involve short ferry crossings to either Iona and/or Ulva, with a small fee to pay as a foot passenger (£4.10 to Iona; £8 to Ulva). All walks will finish between 5pm & 6pm.

The MOUNTAIN WALKS may include iconic mountains such as Ben More (966m), the Isle of Mull’s only Munro (Scottish mountains over 3,000-ft high) and Dùn da Ghaoithe (766m), the island’s only Corbett (Scottish mountains between 2,500 & 3,000-ft high). These are remote mountains with amazing views on a clear day across the western isles. These will be demanding full day mountain walks with steep rocky ground, sustained ascents and descents, rocks, boulders and scree and mountainous terrain. Some sections may be pathless with stretches of open country across rough moorland, bog and mountainous terrain, with stream crossings. There may be some scrambling on Ben More, with exposed and steep mountainous terrain.

The HILL, GLEN, ISLAND & COASTAL WALKS may include the famous Carsaig Arches, the Isle of Iona and St Columba’s Bay, Lochbuie Coastline, the sweeping beaches of Calgary Bay and rugged Ardmore Bay as well as the dramatic coastline of Treshnish Point and the Isle of Ulva. These will be full day walks along clifftops and coastlines, beaches and bays, through glens, across moorland, hills and forests with ascents/descents, uneven rocky coastal and hill paths, river/stream crossings, wet/boggy ground and rough terrain in places. Again, some sections may head across rough and pathless terrain.

The above are walk suggestions; the routes will be decided each day given the weather forecast, ground conditions and group needs.

EVENING: Meet at one of Tobermory’s pubs or restaurants each evening to recount our day’s adventures (optional).
